Distinguish patients with a known substance use-related medical problem (intoxication, dependence, abuse, toxicity, or medical complications of alcohol or drug use) from those with risky or hazardous use patterns related to a current medical condition (traumatic injury following a drug-related car crash, acute pancreatitis, or GERD associated with heavy drinking). Billing and diagnostic codes must include whether the health care provider delivering the SBI services is the primary treating practitioner or a practitioner consulting on patient care.
