Survey found hospitality industry workers more likely to have alcohol problems
April 17, 2008

Major publications such as Toronto’s The Globe and Mail, The Salt Lake Tribune, Washington Business Journal and Occupational Health & Safety recently reported on Ensuring Solutions for Alcohol Problems’ latest analysis that found the hospitality industry to have the most workers with alcohol problems. After analyzing National Survey on Drug Use and Health and the National Comorbidity Survey data, ESAP researchers determined that 15 percent of employees in the hospitality industry suffer from serious alcohol-related problems.

From the employer perspective, employees with unaddressed alcohol problems translate into extra health costs and productivity losses.

“The good news is that it's really easy for businesses to do something about it,” said Eric Goplerud, PhD, director of Ensuring Solutions in an interview with Patrick White from The Globe and Mail. Goplerud went on to recommend that workplace screening and brief intervention programs are an effective method to reduce employee alcohol problems.

The findings were part of Ensuring Solutions’ recent report, Workplace Screening & Brief Intervention: What Employers Can and Should Do About Excessive Alcohol Use.
