In 1997 more than 2.5 million arrests were made for offenses that involved drinking including driving under the influence, drunkenness, liquor law violations, disorderly conduct and vagrancy. Alcohol is far more likely than other drugs to be involved in drug-related violence and is more likely to be involved in crimes against people than property. In about one-half to two-thirds of homicides and serious assaults, alcohol is present in the offender, the victim or both have been drinking. Alcohol is often involved in rape and other sexual assaults. According to one estimate, up to 60 percent of sexual offenders were drinking at the time of the offense.
